Once there was a river flowed down from these hills
it rolled across this country past the forest and the fields
First they built a cabin, then they built a store
then they drilled for oil then they dug for ore
It's the same old story, it always ends the same
A ghost town with a history a highway with a name
the earth gives up her riches to the ghosts in paupers field
while the house silver linings fades in the rearview mirror
used to be a river now there's just this road
from the hallowed halls of progress to a plot on paupers row
it's littered with the victims and shouldered by the crimes
It's hard to tell the difference till you cross the center line
and out here on this highway from the streets of broken dreams
the house of silver linings is always further than it seems
the road is dark and narrow and the curves come hard and fast
and every roadhouse echos with voices of the past
